What are the benefits of a proper bike fit?

A proper bike fit is essential for injury prevention and maximized efficiency. An optimal position on the bike will allow for greater comfort and enjoyment while riding. All bodies are different and your position on the bike should reflect your biomechanics.

Who can benefit from a bike fit?

Generally, if you are serious enough to clip into a bike, you will benefit from a bike fit. Whether you are a professional or recreational rider, getting the proper bike fit is an effective yet economical way to improve performance.

Integrative Standard Fit for Hybrid/Road/Gravel $200

A good fit is more than just a breakdown of parts. What bike you have and what type of riding you do gives us an idea of how to assess you on it. We work with you in order to find out what your goals are and how to best get you there!

Using the FIST protocol and filming in real time with Coaches Eye, we capture in motion data to assess pedal stroke in action, hip-knee-ankle angle, seat height, and handlebar reach. This is important so your body isn’t slowly working it’s way to an injury using potential compensation patterns while you are on the bike.

We evaluate wrist and torso/arm angle, as well as handle bar width to make sure there is decreased tension while riding and saddle make and model to ensure it’s not going to cause pain when you start adding mileage!

We also try to accommodate any injuries you may currently be working through (See our Functional Fit for an in-depth description of a fit for injuries).

All fits come with an evaluation of feet/heel/toe mobility and shoe fit if needed.

Our goal is to work with you so that you can start and continue your bike journey!

Standard fits last up to 90 minutes

Triathlon Fit $300

Tri bikes are in their own special category and if you are looking for a Tri bike fit, we know you are ready to be fast and efficient!

Following the FIST protocol and filming with Coach’s Eye, we capture data for an accurate assessment in real time so we can determine the best numbers for your body on the bike: seat height, seat angle, hip angle, both open and closed, cockpit length, torso arm angle, wrist angle and handle bar drop and aerobars. We also include saddle make and model, crank arm length, handle bar width, reach and drop and aerobars.

All fits come with an evaluation of feet/heel/toe mobility and shoe fit if needed.

Tri bike fits may last up to 120 minutes.

All fits include a complimentary review up to 3 months. Please note we have a 24 hour cancellation fee of $75

Functional Fit Bike Fit: $350

A Functional Bike Fit is a full body neuro-kinetic assessment and treatment of body alignment and muscle patterns while you are on the bike so you have less pain, more power, and better performance.  Adjusting the bike to fit the body isn’t always the most efficient way to gain speed and power. Postural assessment and manual therapy during a fit by a Functional Fitter gives instant and usable results during the fit, allowing for the cyclist to gain knowledge of why they are experiencing pain and what muscles are inefficient during their ride. Functional Fits may last up to two hours.

Functional Bike Fitter: Kim Fischer-Key

Kim Fischer-Key, CMT, LMBT, NCBTMB, began her professional life of bodywork in the Bay Area after returning to the states in 2000 with several French degrees. She obtained her Massage Therapy Certification in 2005 with a specialization in Neuromuscular Reeducation and passed the National Board Certification in Massage Therapy in 2006.

In 2008. Kim became the Director of Clinical Massage Therapy and created a clinically focused professional mentor program for massage therapists and taught at two area massage therapy schools. She was also on call for performers for the Washington Ballet and the Kennedy Center. Kim became certified in Clinical Bike Fit after a move west to Portland, Oregon in 2013. She used her posture knowledge with injured cyclists and started Functional Fit to discern athletes’ inefficient body patterns with bike corrections to create a longer, pain free race. Together with Bill Helwig, they developed a collaborative approach to bike fitting to ensure that body patterns are optimal while riding in order to make a cyclist faster.

Always seeking to expand her skills, she completed Mind Body Medicine training at Harvard, has a Postural Alignment Certification from the founders of The Center of Neurosomatic Studies and was the first American to graduate from Connaissance et Evolution with a diploma in Neuro-Sensory Therapy in Paris, France, a two year program in understanding chronic pain for European osteopaths. She has a certification in Myofascial Decompression (MFD) with Chris Daprato, DPT, from UCSF and is currently finishing a course in Pregnancy and Postpartum Athleticism to find better ways of working with female athletes returning to (or starting) training after their bodies have undergone change.

After spending two years in Boone, North Carolina as the Sport Massage Therapist for Appalachian State Football Team, Kim relocated to Northern Virginia with her family. She is also a three year member of the National XPE Core Sport Bodywork Team, working with Division I football players preparing for the NFL Draft at a training facility in Florida where, five of her athletes were signed.

Currently, Kim sees clients at TBL as well as a space in Arlington. Check out all things FunctionalFit,
